From May 2021 to April 2024, AYI Uganda and like-minded partners ran the project Promoting Good Health and Well-being of Adolescent Mothers and their Children in Bugiri and Busia districts, Eastern Uganda.

The project worked with adolescent mothers living with HIV and their children. It set out to build the mothers’ capacity to be self-reliant and to promote positive living among their peers, to set up community support for health care and parenting, to link them to quality SRHR and HIV services, and to create an environment where mothers and children can do well. Selected mothers were trained as Leaders-in-Action.

Young mothers’ clubs

Eight sessions for pregnant adolescents and first-time mothers, building their knowledge of sexual and reproductive health and their life skills.

Health workers

Interactive training for health service providers to change attitudes and biases towards giving adolescents sexual and reproductive health services, including family planning. The sessions use participatory exercises from the Social Analysis and Action approach and focus on communication, adolescent-friendly services and rights-based family planning counselling.

Community engagement

Training for community members that uses reflection, exploration and action to rally household and community support for married, pregnant and first-time adolescent mothers, with the long-term aim of transforming inequitable power and gender dynamics.
